Old-growth tropical forests harbor an immense diversity of tree species but are rapidly being cleared, while secondary forests that regrow on abandoned agricultural lands increase in extent. We assess how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics. Secondary forests recover remarkably fast in species richness but slowly in species composition. Secondary forests take a median time of five decades to recover the species richness of old-growth forest (80% recovery after 20 years) based on rarefaction analysis. Full recovery of species composition takes centuries (only 34% recovery after 20 years). A dual strategy that maintains both old-growth forests and species-rich secondary forests is therefore crucial for biodiversity conservation in human-modified tropical landscapes.

Tropical forests are converted at an alarming rate for agricultural use and pastureland, but also regrow naturally through secondary succession. For successful forest restoration, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of secondary succession. These mechanisms may vary across forest types, but analyses across broad spatial scales are lacking. Here, we analyse forest recovery using 1,403 plots that differ in age since agricultural abandonment from 50 sites across the Neotropics. We analyse changes in community composition using species-specific stem wood density (WD), which is a key trait for plant growth, survival and forest carbon storage. In wet forest, succession proceeds from low towards high community WD (acquisitive towards conservative trait values), in line with standard successional theory. However, in dry forest, succession proceeds from high towards low community WD (conservative towards acquisitive trait values), probably because high WD reflects drought tolerance in harsh early successional environments. Dry season intensity drives WD recovery by influencing the start and trajectory of succession, resulting in convergence of the community WD over time as vegetation cover builds up. These ecological insights can be used to improve species selection for reforestation. Reforestation species selected to establish a first protective canopy layer should, among other criteria, ideally have a similar WD to the early successional communities that dominate under the prevailing macroclimatic conditions.

The nutrient demands of regrowing tropical forests are partly satisfied by nitrogen-fixing legume trees, but our understanding of the abundance of those species is biased towards wet tropical regions. Here we show how the abundance of Leguminosae is affected by both recovery from disturbance and large-scale rainfall gradients through a synthesis of forest inventory plots from a network of 42 Neotropical forest chronosequences. During the first three decades of natural forest regeneration, legume basal area is twice as high in dry compared with wet secondary forests. The tremendous ecological success of legumes in recently disturbed, water-limited forests is likely to be related to both their reduced leaflet size and ability to fix N2, which together enhance legume drought tolerance and water-use efficiency. Earth system models should incorporate these large-scale successional and climatic patterns of legume dominance to provide more accurate estimates of the maximum potential for natural nitrogen fixation across tropical forests.

We propose a methodology to estimate the environmental service (ES) value of small farms in Chiapas, Mexico, involving trained farmers-promoters in field sampling. We considered the ways in which the landscape's principal organisms, the trees, contribute to ES. We proposed a species functional value (FV) index based on their functional traits and key ecological characteristics, and estimated each site's ES value using FV weighted by the dimensions and abundance of individuals in different land uses (LU). Tree contribution to carbon storage (C) was defined using species wood density and biodiversity conservation value (BD) using food and habitat provision for wildlife and species existence (non-use) value (EX). Many species and individuals had high C, as wind-dispersed species with dense wood were common, but low BD prevailed, with high BD species common only in riparian forests. Few species and fewer individuals had high EX conferred by dense wood, large size, harvesting pressure and animal dispersal, among others. High variance in value within LU types, suggested that LU is a poor estimator of ES value, and that the measurement of species FV and tree dimensions is essential. This tool accurately reflects the ecological values of farm tree cover, allowing negotiation of compensation for environmental services. This methodology could be implemented combining open-access regional traits databases and field sampling by local people, and can easily be adapted for the measurement of other ES, and to other ecological and cultural contexts. The functional ecology approach was adapted to assess environmental services. Existence (non use) value of trees was used in biodiversity service estimation. Environmental services valuation based only on land use category is questioned. Outside forest, carbon service value was high but biodiversity value low. We recognize complexity to accurately estimate environmental service supply.

Se han reportado incrementos en la producción hasta del 50% en cafetos visitados por abejas, que comúnmente representan más del 95% de sus visitantes florales. El área de cobertura del bosque circundante (m2ha-1) fue la variable que tuvo mayor relación con la riqueza y abundancia de abejas en cuatro zonas cafeteras de Costa Rica. Al eliminar el efecto de esta variable, la presencia de las abejas sin aguijón (Meliponini) y Apis mellifera fue más relacionado con la proximidad de los árboles de sombra por ser su principal recurso de nido, mientras que otras abejas de la familia Apidae (incluyendo euglosinas), Halictidae y Megachilidae respondieron a la vegetación de malezas (fuente de alimento) por no limitar sus sitios de nido a los árboles. En un estudio en una finca, se observó que la abundancia de abejas sin aguijón se concentró en el borde del cafetal que colindaba a un bosque ripario, mientras que A. mellifera no mostró diferencias entre sitios cerca y lejos de este bosque, sugiriendo la diferente capacidad de vuelo de estos dos grupos de abejas.

Natural forests managed for timber production conserve tropical biodiversity, but how much? In a lowland wet forest of northeastern Costa Rica, we studied bees and understory flowers in regenerating forest plots logged 6-8 years previously, including silviculturally refined plots where non-timber species were removed. The experiment had a complete randomized block design with 3.24 ha plots (n = 3 per treatment) surrounded by 40 m buffer strips. Our four-month comparative study covered the major flowering period. Overall, 69 species monitored for visitors at 629 individuals demonstrated bees visited and likely pollinated 55 to 80% of understory plants[-]a mixture of primary forest species in shaded microsites (e.g., palms) and pioneers associated with relatively high insolation (e.g., certain Melastomataceae, Rubiaceae and Solanaceae). Small Halictinae predominated among the bees at flowers; 62% of the 21 species were undescribed. Few notable differences were found among plots of forest drastically altered by culling of non-timber species, and naturally regenerating forest. Such control and refined plots were similar in numbers of species flowering, richness of bees, visitor species per plant, and insolation. Both plot groups had similar complements of halictine species, as well as relatively low levels of foraging specialization by bees evidently nesting, as well as foraging, within plots. Bees were mainly active in shaded microhabitats of closed forest, but the small proportion of relatively insolated plants was heavily visited. Rarity of both native bees frequent in sunny, exposed sites (e.g., Megachile, Centris, Xylocopa) and of African honey bees, is evidence for existence of both a distinctive guild of understory bees and their perception of conditions in logged forests as similar to those of mature forest.
