The present study aims to analyze the role of traditional knowledge in territorial autonomy and environmental governance, as well as the level of interest of different indigenous and non-indigenous actors in the southern Colombian Amazon in applying traditional knowledge to public policy. Using the theoretical approaches of political ecology as well as a qualitative method, we describe a multidisciplinary project developed and implemented to incorporate knowledge systems of indigenous peoples of the Colombian Amazon into environmental policy. The results present an analysis of arguments by indigenous organizations, researchers, and government environmental agency administrators for and against using traditional knowledge to address the global ecological crisis. Through interviews and reports systematized by researchers and local collaborators within the project, we discuss conflicts that emerge when attempts are made to apply traditional knowledge in asymmetrical spaces of power. This includes responses by local residents to the global governance regime, which imposes policies regarding traditional knowledge in indigenous territories, and the possible repercussions of environmental policies on indigenous autonomy regimes in territories considered to be ancestral by indigenous peoples. We conclude that indigenous communities and organizations are more willing to apply traditional knowledge to public policy when the process is oriented toward strengthening their territorial and environmental autonomy than when external actors attempt to use this knowledge to promote global regulatory regimes that are beyond the control of local actors.

The idea that Amazonian forests have been largely untouched by humans has fascinated naturalists, policy makers, the media, and natural and social scientists worldwide. For many decades, ecological studies overlooked the influence of past peoples in modern forests. However, humans arrived in the Amazon basin at least 13,000 years Before Present (BP) and populations expanded strongly around 2,500 years BP. Evidence of past human activities has been found in extensive areas previously considered pristine. Anthropogenic soils (Amazonian Dark Earths - ADE) and human-made earthworks found across the basin are examples of the landscapes domesticated by pre-Columbian peoples and evidence of large societies with considerable capacity for modifying the environment. Cultivation and management of Amazonian fora by past societies may have significantly contributed to the ecological patterns we see today. These findings stimulated an academic debate about the pristineness versus domestication of Amazonian forests. Although most scientists agree that human impacts were spatially heterogeneous across the basin, the scale of past human influences in Amazonian forests remains controversial. A more realistic and broad- scale view is required (Chapter 1). In my thesis, I integrated data from different disciplines in the social and natural sciences to generate the first broad-scale assessment of the effects of long-term human influences in modern Amazonian forests and how these legacies are maintained by local management practices. I studied the Amazon forest as a mosaic of patches domesticated to different degrees by human-nature interactions.

Ecometrica, together with partners in the UK, Mexico and Brazil, have collaborated on a UK Space Agency international partnership space programme (IPSP) project to advance EO applications in forests. A key objective was to improve EO derived information management for forest protection. Ecometrica’s cloud-based mapping platform was used to establish regional EO Labs within the partner organizations: ECOSUR (Mexico), INPE and FUNCATE (Brazil) and the University of Edinburgh (UK). The regional networks of EO Labs have provided a unified view of forestry-related data that is easy to access. In Mexico and Brazil the EO Labs enabled collaboration between research organisations and NGOs to develop applications for monitoring forest change in specified study areas and has enabled the compilation of previously unavailable regional EO and other spatial datasets into products that can be used by researchers, NGOs and state governments. Data on forest loss was linked to dynamic earth system models developed by the University of Edinburgh and INPE, utilising the EO Labs to provide an intuitive and powerful environment in which non-expert end-users can investigate the results from the huge datasets produced by multi-run model simulations. This paper demonstrates and discusses examples of mapping applications created on Ecometrica EO Labs by ECOSUR, INPE and the University of Edinburgh as part of this project, illustrating how cloud technology can enhance the field of forest protection.

Analizaremos las principales discusiones alrededor de su derecho al “aislamiento” como una estrategia de resistencia al contacto con el “mundo”.

Based on the different processes of settlement of the Colombian Amazon, this article explains what were the different stages, or states, in which the Yuri and Passe tribes reached the radical decision of isolation. The article analyzes the main arguments regarding their right to “isolation” as a resistance strategy towards contact with the “world”.

Winner of the Society for Economic Botany's Mary W. Klinger Book Award. Cultural Forests of the Amazon is a comprehensive and diverse account of how indigenous people transformed landscapes and managed resources in the most extensive region of tropical forests in the world. Until recently, most scholars and scientists, as well as the general public, thought indigenous people had a minimal impact on Amazon forests, once considered to be total wildernesses. William Balé e's research, conducted over a span of three decades, shows a more complicated truth. In Cultural Forests of the Amazon, he argues that indigenous people, past and present, have time and time again profoundly transformed nature into culture. Moreover, they have done so using their traditional knowledge and technology developed over thousands of years. Balé e demonstrates the inestimable value of indigenous knowledge in providing guideposts for a potentially less destructive future for environments and biota in the Amazon. He shows that we can no longer think about species and landscape diversity in any tropical forest without taking into account the intricacies of human history and the impact of all forms of knowledge and technology. Balé e describes the development of his historical ecology approach in Amazonia, along with important material on little-known forest dwellers and their habitats, current thinking in Amazonian historical ecology, and a narrative of his own dialogue with the Amazon and its people.

Recent claims regarding convergence and divergence between land change science and political ecology as approaches to the study of human-environment relationships and sustainability science are examined and analyzed in this innovative volume. Comprised of 11 commissioned chapters as well as introductory and concluding/synthesis chapters, it advances the two fields by proposing new conceptual and methodological approaches toward integrating land change science and political ecology. The book also identifies areas of fundamental difference and disagreement between fields. These theoretical contributions will help a generation of young researchers refine their research approaches and will advance a debate among established scholars in geography, land-use studies, and sustainability science that has been developing since the early 2000s. At an empirical level, case studies focusing on sustainable development are included from Africa, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia. The specific topics addressed include tropical deforestation, swidden agriculture, mangrove forests, gender, and household issues.

Se presenta una revisión taxonómica de las especies de Cohniella distribuidas al lado sur del río Amazonas en Sudamérica. En esta revisión, reconocemos un hibrido natural y seis especies, una de estas se describe en el presente artículo como nueva, Cohniella caatingaensis, endémica de la Caatinga del nordeste de Brasil. Además, se clarifica la circunscripción y los rangos de distribución de C. binotii, C. cepula y C. sprucei. Con base en la morfología vegetativa y floral se reconocen dos grupos de especies, el complejo C. cepula y el complejo C. jonesiana. Se presentan descripciones taxonómicas detalladas para todas las especie, incluyendo información sobre la distribución, ecología, caracteres diagnósticos, rango de variación, comentarios taxonómicos, material adicional examinado e ilustraciones. Adicionalmente, se incluyen una clave y una tabla de comparación para distinguir los caracteres diagnósticos entre las especies y sus mapas de distribución para cada complejo.

We present a taxonomic revision of the Cohniella species occurring south of the Amazon River in South America. In this revision, we recognize a naturally occuring hybrid and six species, one of which is herein proposed as new, Cohniella caatingaensis, restricted to the Caatinga of northeastern Brazil. Furthermore, we clarify the specific circumscriptions and distribution range of C. binotii, C. cepula, and C. sprucei. Based on vegetative and floral morphology, we recognize two species groups, the C. jonesiana and the C. cepula complexes. Detailed taxonomic descriptions are given for all species, including short accounts of their distribution and ecology, diagnostic characters, variation range, taxonomic comments, and additional material examined. Relevant iconography is listed for each species. Additionally, a key and a table featuring diagnostic characters to distinguish between species are provided as well as distribution maps for each species-complex.

Cohniella crece en las tierras bajas tropicales desde el norte de México hasta el suroeste de Brasil y norte de Argentina. Este género ha sido definido dentro de Oncidiinae por sus hojas teretes y las flores como de Oncidium. Sin embargo, desde su restablecimiento en 1999 por Christenson, su estatus genérico de Oncidium ha sido controversial como distinto, así como de una amplia circunscripción de Trichocentrum. Además, dentro del género el problema de la circunscripción específica derivaba de la similitud vegetativa y floral y de la ausencia de caracteres diagnósticos que permitiera definirlas claramente, como consecuencia algunas especies a lo largo del Neotrópico fueron incluidas en la sinonimia o como variación morfológica de C. cebolleta. En este estudio se analizó la sistemática de Cohniella mediante la revisión de especímenes de herbario, la caracterización de la anatomía foliar, la secuenciación de tres regiones de ADN, una nuclear (ITS) y dos cloroplásticas (matk-trnK y psbA-trnH) y de espacios codificados de cloroplasto. Estas cuatro fuentes de datos fueron analizadas independientemente y combinadas en un análisis filogenético. Producto del tratamiento taxonómico se reconocieron 22 especies, un híbrido natural y cinco complejos de especies reconocidos por caracteres morfológicos y de distribución geográfica. El análisis filogenético combinado confirmó la monofilia de Cohniella, Lophiarella, Lophiaris y Trichocentrum, con fuerte apoyo del bootstrap y con varias sinapormorfías morfológicas. Además, dentro de Cohniella se recuperó cinco clados que corresponden a los complejos naturales de especies, uno de estos clados fue descrito como un nuevo subgenéro, (Gondwana). Por otro lado, el análisis filogenético anatómico también apoyó la monofilia de Cohniella con base en las hojas anfistomáticas y la presencia de engrosamientos en la pared celular.

Cohniella grows in tropical lowlands from northern Mexico to southwestern Brazil and northern Argentina. This genus has been defined within Oncidiinae by terete leaves and Oncidium-like flowers. However, since its resurrection in 1999 by Christenson, the generic status as distinct from Oncidium, as well as from a broadly circumscribed Trichocentrum has been controversial. Furthermore, within the genus the problem of circumscription specific stemmed from vegetative and floral similarity and the absence of diagnostic features that would clearly define, as a consequence some species along the Neotropics were included in the synonymy or morphological variation of C. cebolleta. In this study we examined the systematics, phylogeny and biogeography of Cohniella through the revision of herbarium specimens, the characterization of leaf anatomy, sequencing of three DNA regions, one nuclear (ITS) and two chloroplast (matk-trnK and psbA-trnH) and coded gap of matk-trnK and psbA-trnH. These four sources of data were analyzed independently and combined in a phylogenetic analysis. In the taxonomic treatment recognized 22 species, one natural hybrid, and five species complexes recognized by morphological characters and geographical distribution. The combined phylogenetic analysis confirmed the monophyly of Cohniella, Lophiarella, Lophiaris, and Trichocentrum, with strong bootstrap support and several morphological synapomorphies. Moreover, within Cohniella five subclades that correspond to natural species were recovered complexes, one of these subclades was described as a new subgenus (Gondwana). On the other hand, the anatomical phylogenetic analysis also supported the monophyly of Cohniella based on the amphistomatic leaves and the presence of cell wall thickenings.

Landscapes are frequently seen as fragments of natural habitat surrounded by a "sea" of agriculture. But recent ecological theory shows that the nature of these fragments is not nearly as important for conservation as is the nature of the matrix of agriculture that surrounds them. Local extinctions from conservation fragments are inevitable and must be balanced by migrations if massive extinction is to be avoided. High migration rates only occur in what the authors refer to as "high quality" matrices, which are created by alternative agroecological techniques, as opposed to the industrial monocultural model of agriculture. The authors, including SNRE Professor Ivette Perfecto, argue that the only way to promote such high quality matrices is to work with rural social movements. Their ideas are at odds with the major trends of some of the large conservation organizations that emphasize targeted land purchases of protected areas. They argue that recent advances in ecological research make such a general approach anachronistic and call, rather, for solidarity with the small farmers around the world who are currently struggling to attain food sovereignty. Nature's Matrix proposes a radically new approach to the conservation of biodiversity based on recent advances in the science of ecology plus political realities, particularly in the world's tropical regions.
