520 1 _ a| Some experiences on the design and implementation of forest restoration strategies in different socio-environmental contexts of Chiapas are presented. Forest restoration is a process that should involve the social construction of agreements and strategies. These actions legitimize both the needs of restoring part of the structure and function of ecosystems, as well as the needs, interests and aspirations of the different stakeholders involved to promote their full development. Through participatory biological and social research, it was found that although forest restoration is recognized as a necessity in the local and regional context, the required ecological knowledge is usually limited. Local knowledge is mostly restricted to utilitarian or production of certain species due to high levels of degradation of the composition, structure and function of the forests. Many of the forest restoration actions depend on the socio-environmental context and may include a range of stakeholders from those interested in solving their economic and immediate production needs, to more organized groups that drive their actions more consistently and may provide economic viability in the long term. From an ecological perspective, it is proposed to strengthen community capacity by recognizing local and regional species richness of trees that can and should be preserved in their territories. Some of the strategies for forest landscape restoration arising from the Community’s own interests are related to the identification of priorities for the sustainable production of wood, soil protection and rehabilitation of agricultural productivity, protection of riparian flora, and enrichment of tree plantings in areas of secondary forests, among other schemes of Community forest management.
