Chiapas in southern Mexico is considered to be an important region for migratory birds, due to its geographic position in the continent and its variety of habitat and vegetation types. From existing literature and other unpublished sources of information, we analyze the distribution of wintering migratory landbirds in Chiapas. Data classified by physiographic regions and vegetation types, as well as information related to habitat use, are presented here. From the migratory birds recorded in Chiapas, 93 species are wintering landbirds. The families Emberizidae and Anatidae have the greatest number of species occurring in the state, 16 species are confined to rain forest and temperate forest habitats. According the results obtained by a similarity analysis the composition of the wintering avifauna showed a difference between high and low elevations. The Central Plateau is the physiographic region in Chiapas with the greatest number of wintering birds species, whereas in the Gulf Coastal Plain the lowest number of species has been recorded. By using criteria such as migratory landbirds distribution in Chiapas, breeding range of the species (wide or restricted), population trends reported for the species, we propose that the Central Plateau and the Pacific Coastal Plain are regions of priority for conservation and research studies in the state. Finally we present a list of the species that require special concern in terms of populations monitoring and research studies.
