En el Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano (VRS), la cobertura y densidad general promedio de coral vivo es 19.1% and 1.0 col m-1. Las especies dominantes en términos de cobertura absoluta del fondo arrecifal son: Colpophyllia natans, Orbicella faveolata, Montastraea cavernosa, Pseudodiploria spp., Siderastrea siderea y S. radians. La estructura de la comunidad en el SAV es muy diferente con respecto a los arrecifes del Atlántico tropical oriental, y esto puede ser explicado como una consecuencia de los efectos diferenciales en el desempeño de los corales que habitan en el ambiente altamente turbio como del SAV. La densidad de reclutas coralinos es baja (2.6 Rec m-²), lo que compromete la capacidad de recuperación de la comunidad coralina ante un disturbio natural y/o antropogénico. La cobertura por coral vivo ha disminuido de ~33% en los 1960s a ~19% a finales de los 1980s, y desde entonces ha permanecido estable (~20%).

In the Veracruz Reef System (VRS) general average of living coral cover and density are 19.1% and 1.0 col m-1. The dominant coral species, in terms of absolute reef bottom cover are: Colpophyllia natans, Orbicella faveolata, Montastraea cavernosa, Pseudodiploria spp., Siderastrea siderea, and S. radians. The community structure is different between western tropical Atlantic reefs and the VRS, which could be explained as a consequence of the differential effect on the performance of corals that thrive in the highly turbid environment of the VRS. Coral recruits density is low (2.6 Rec m-²), which compromise the recovery of the coral community after natural and/or anthropogenic disturbances. The live coral cover has declined from ~33% in the 1960s to ~19% in the late 1980s, since then it has remained in a steady state (~20%).

Distribution and prevalence of coral diseases in the Veracruz Reef System, Southern Gulf of Mexico

Ten reefs of the Veracruz Reef System (VRS) were surveyed to evaluate the distribution and prevalence of diseases that affect stony corals. Total disease prevalence on corals in the VRS was 4.8%. Seven diseases affecting 6 coral genera (4 of which are the most abundant) were observed in 85.2% of the evaluated sites. As observed in other reefs of the Caribbean, dark spots disease had the highest prevalence (2.9%) and widest distribution. The incidence of disease showed a patchy distribution, with prevalence being significantly higher on the reef flats than on the windward and leeward sides.

Growth parameters (skeletal extension, density, and calcification rate) were determined using annual growth bands along 12 slabs of skeletons of the reef building coral Montastraea annularis, collected at 1. m depth in Puerto Morelos and at 10 m depth in Xahuayxol, in the Mexican Caribbean. X-radiography contact prints revealed that the high-density annual growth band is formed during summer, possibly between July and September, when the sea water temperatures are highest in the Mexican Caribbean. Skeletal extension, density and calcification rates obtained were within the range of values presented by other authors for M. annularis in different reefs distributed throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Only slight trends could be identified for the time span represented by the slabs (1980-1995) for the three parameters, suggesting that the environmental conditions have been quite similar for the past 1.5 decades. Using the available environmental data, it seems that, at least, water temperatures have been similar for the period of time studied in the two reef zones. In addition, the observed relationships among the growth parameters were similar to those previously described by other authors. An alternative to the more expensive density measurement procedures is described and discussed.

In order to assess the effects of hurricane Keith at a patch reef lagoon of banco chinchorro we surveyed using 1-m2 permanent quadrats before and after the storm crossed to Mexican Caribbean. thirteen scleractinian species were observed. Relative importance value of each scleractinian coral estimated. Porites astreoides, agaricia agaricites, madracis decactis, porites porites, and favia fragum presented an importance value higher than 25%. Analyzing the size -frequency distribution, mode, and asymmetry of these species it seems that there is an active recruitment within coral populations. Also, the qualitative percent of the following substrata components was estimated: living coral tissue, recently dead coral tissue, old dead coral tissue, macroalgae, filamentous algae, and sand. There were no significant differences for all components before and after hurricane Keith. there in evidence that the patch reef studied eas significantly lower from percent cover of recently dead coral tissue, this result, together with the topographic complexity index obtained (c=0.47), indicated low disturbance levels. Resuspended sediments rate was significantly higher during hurricane Keith pass (127.9 mg cm-2 d-1) and temperature clearly decreased, but there were not apparently negative effects on the patch reef studied and the rest of the reef. the lack of evident hurricane effects can be explained in terms of the community structure of the patch reef studied.

A revised and annotated checklist of fifty-seven zooxanthellate stony coral species (three milleporids and fifty-four sclcractinian) is presented for the Mexican East Coast. This report includes synonyms and a simplified key to species on the list. Morphological and taxonomic observations are included when authors disagree in the taxonomic position and/or identification of the species, as well as when taxonomic information is pertinent, or when distribution data are relevant for some species in the Mexican Atlantic. A qualitative analysis of species abundance and geographic distribution, and bathymetric range data are presented. There is a reduction in the genera and species numbers from the Mexican Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico and there, from the Campeche Bank to Veracruz. Furthermore, the number of abundant species is lower in the Gulf of Mexico than in the Mexican Caribbean, and the common species for all reef zones have a wider bathymetric range in the Mexican Caribbean.
