Influence of body size on coexistence of bird species

Theory suggests that body size is an important factor in determining interspecific competition and, ultimately, in structuring ecological communities. However, there is a lack of pragmatic studies linking body size and interspecific competition to patterns in ecological communities. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of body size (mass) on competitive interactions between bird pairs and to investigate the influence of food guilds. Point-counts were carried out in nine sites every month from November 2002 to November 2003 in the Cuetzalan Region, Mexico, and we used presence/absence and abundance data for the analyses. To calculate the strength of competition we used the Angle Frequency Method to extract form factors from 20 pairwise interactions. A prototype competition interaction and random pairs were also constructed. We used clustering techniques (PCA) to calculate the dissimilarity scores (distances, D) of each of the pairwise interactions to the prototype competition and random pairs and one-way ANOVA to test for differences between the means of the random and competitive pairs.

The ratio in body mass (lnBM) for each of the interacting pairs was calculated, and the association between the lnBM ratio and the strength of competition (D) was tested using a Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. To test for the influence of foraging guilds we used a univariate general linear model. Our results demonstrate a significant negative relationship between bird body mass ratio and competition strength – i.e. competition strength increased when the body masses of the birds became more similar. We did not find a significant influence of foraging guild on the relationship between body mass ratio and competition strength. On the basis of these results, we suggest that high variation in body sizes amongst sympatric species promotes coexistence in communities.

Se efectuaron 59 levantamientos fitosociológicos en la Laguna Quila, del Parque Nacional “Lagunas de Zempoala”, México, según el método Zürich-Montpellier. Se identificaron y describieron 11 comunidades, separadas en una fase “acuática” y en una “helofítica”. Se encontró un gradiente de profundidad con dirección norte-sur y se observó una continua desecación del cuerpo de agua. Se elaboró un mapa de vegetación en escala 1: 1900. Se enlistan un total de 21 familias, 33 géneros y 41 especies de plantas vasculares. Las familias mejor representadas son Cyperaceae con siete especies y Ranunculaceae con cuatro. Desde el punto de vista fitogeográfico, a nivel genérico el componente templado alcanza 65%, el cosmopolita 30%, mientras que el tropical 5%. Las especies del área estudiada tienen distribución amplia, presentándose en lagunas e hidroseries de México y de zonas templadas de América. Las comunidades acuáticas están desapareciendo muy rápidamente en todo el país; por lo que es fundamental entender la dinámica y el manejo adecuado de este recurso. A fin de proteger la laguna se recomienda controlar urgentemente el bombeo de agua y reducir el pastoreo así como eliminar otras actividades que la afecten indirectamente.

A phytosociological study of 59 relevés was carried out at Laguna Quila, National Park Lagunas de Zempoala, México, using the Zürich-Montpellier approach. Eleven communities were identified and described. A distinction was made between a submerged and a helophytic hydroseral vegetation. A pronounced humidity gradient was identified in a northsouth direction, and also a continuous desiccation was observed. A vegetation map scale 1:1900 is included. 21 families of vascular plants including 41 species and 33 genera have been identified. Families best represented include Cyperaceae with seven species and Ranunculaceae with four species. Phytogeographical analysis on the generic level revealed that the temperate component reached 65%, the cosmopolitan 30% and the tropical 5%. The species of Laguna Quila have a wide distribution in Mexican hydroseries and elsewhere in temperate America. Aquatic and semi-aquatic communities are vanishing rapidly in Mexico, and it is important to understand the dynamics for adequate management of this natural resource. In order to protect this lake it is recommended to control the water extraction of the laguna, to exclude cattle and other activities who can affect indirectly Laguna Quila.
