The abundance, distribution, size, structure, nutritional quality and feasibility of exploitation of a sea cucumber population, an alternative fishery resource for Banco Chinchorro (Mexican Caribbean) were evaluated. Sampling was conduced during the three main climatic seasons: rainy (September 1998), cold front (December 1998) and dry (April 1999). Five sampling sites were chosen to cover the three major habitats: seagrass (north, central), reef patches (north, south), and shallow sandy-bottoms. Three species and a hybrid were identified: Holothuria thomasi, H. mexicana, H. floridana, and H. floridana × H. mexicana. H. floridana was the most abundant (mean density = 0.12 ind m−2). Growth and natural mortality parameters, and maximum sustainable yield (MSY), were estimated using simplified protocols commonly predicated for the assessment of tropical fisheries, all assuming equilibrium conditions. Banco Chinchorro was hit by Hurricane Mitch following the first survey; estimated abundance during the second survey (after the hurricane) was only 14% of the pre-hurricane survey. Based on this study case we discuss (1) the shortcomings of methods assuming equilibrium, (2) the need for specific life-history data, and (3) the research opportunities provided by the response of populations to natural disturbances or to harvesting.

The biomass and productivity of a seagrass community are useful for determining the ecological status of the coast. Leaf biomass and shoot density in beds of Thalassia testudinum Banks & Sol. ex K. D. Koenig, were compared for two environments in the Mexican Caribbean coast (N= 6 quadrants/site) in November 1998. Shoot and leaf biomass values were lower in the mangrove-associated meadow than in the reef lagoon meadow. This could be related to the higher percentage of epiphytes on mangrove leaves. In addition, T. testudinum had more biomass than Syringodium filiforme Kütz in the reef lagoon.

The abundance, distribution, size, structure, nutritional quality and the feasibility of exploitation of the sea cucumber populations of Banco Chinchorro were evaluated as an alternative fishery resource. Sampling was conduced during the three most important climatic seasons: rain y (Sept. '98), cold-front (Dec. ’98) and dry (April '99). Five sampling sites were chosen, considering the general topography: north and central seagrass, north and south reef patches and shallow sandybottoms. All specimens were measured and thirteen were taken to the laboratory for further identification and broma tologic analysis. Three species and a hyb rid w e re identified: Holothuria floridana x mexicana, Holothuria thomasi, Holothuria mexicana, and Holothuria floridana. The last one was the most abundant (0.12 ind./m2), and its total length varied from 9 to 51 cm. The von Bertalanffy growth model parameters estimated were Lco=57.9 cm and k=0.21 (year-1). Natural mortality rate was M=0.72 (year-1). All species had the same carbohydrates content (0.08%), whereas contents of protein (46.4-74.2%), moisture (73 -90% ), fat (0.8-1.7% ) and ash (9.6-1 8.3% ) varied among species. Annual maximum sustainable yield was estimated in M SY=1 16.033 tons, indicating that there is a low potential for a small-scale sea cucumber fishery in Banco Chinchorro.

The Majagual patch reef was surveyed 13 days after the indirect effects of hurricane Mitch with 1 m2 quadrants and rapid assesment techniques. In comparison with an earlier survey in the Xahuayxol reef, live coral cover was low (11.5% ± 5.2), whereas the cover of filamentous seaweed and old dead coral was high (53.7% ± 27.7 in bath of them). The coral community disturbance may have began several years ago, and low algal turf growth suggests indirect effects of hurricane Mitch, because the surge suspended sediments. Frequency of Favia fragum (Esper) and encrusting coralline algae encounters was higher than for other coral/alga pairs; this suggest a possible effect specificity.
