A preliminary study on the effect of biofertilizer combined with earthworms on Zea mays and Phaseolus vulgaris was conducted in Tabasco Mexico. Biofertilizer, also known as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, has been identified as an alternative to chemical fertilizer, for increasing soil fertility and crop production. Earthworms are also important components of the rhizosphere ecosystem, capable of enhancing plant growth. And so, in this study we combined N-fixer (Azospirillum brasiliensis, Azotobacter chroococcum) and P solubilizer (Bacillus megaterium) bacteria with earthworms (Glossoscolecidae, Pontoscolex corethrurus); a randomized 2 x 2 factorial was set up to investigate the effects of biofertilizers and earthworms on maize and bean growth, conducting eight treatments with four replications each per plant. Dry yield production and plant and fruit biomass were measured. Treatments that combined earthworms and biofertilizers promoted the highest growth of P. vulgaris (earthworms with Azotobacter chroococcum 98.2 cm), the highest dry plant mass was enhanced by Azospirillum brasiliensis for Z. mays (34 g), and the highest yield production for Z. mays was enhanced with the presence of earthworms (1330-1350 kg.ha-1 earthworms with Azotobacter chroococcum and earthworms with Bacillus megaterium), 4-fold higher than control.
