An egg mass fragment and one paralarva of the squid Thysanoteuthis rhombus found in the Northeastern Tropical Pacific and Gulf of California, Mexico are the first evidence of reproduction of this species in the region. The egg mass fragment was in the disintegration process and contained 30,360 premature hatchlings (96.2%) and 1,192 eggs (3.8%) at different developmental stages. Head chromatophore patterns, buccal crown pigmentation, arm and tentacles indexes, and other morphological characteristics complement previous descriptions of T. rhombus paralarvae. The zooplanktonic community associated with the egg mass was dominated by six species of predatory copepods of the genus Labidocera, Pontella, Oncaea, and Corycaeus which might have actively colonized the egg mass to feed upon the eggs and hatchlings.

We provide the first estimations of calanoid copepod egg production rates (EPR) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific over an annual cycle (January–December 2011). Gravid females were collected twice monthly and incubated for 12 h without food to estimate EPR, weight-specific fecundity (Gf), spawning success (SS, percentage of females to spawn out of the total species incubated per month and season) and egg hatching success (EHS). This study reports the average EPR of 10 species and the monthly EPR and Gf of four planktonic calanoid copepods (Centropages furcatus, Temora discaudata, Pontellina sobrina, and Nannocalanus minor) that spawned with enough frequency to infer their seasonal reproductive patterns. These species showed distinct seasonal reproductive strategies. Most copepod species spawned sporadically with large EPR variability, while three copepod species reproduced throughout the year (C. furcatus, T. discaudata and P. sobrina) and N. minor spawned only during the mixed period (Feb–May). The four species had relatively similar average EPR (C. furcatus 16, T. discaudata 18, P. sobrina 13, and N. minor 12 eggs fem−¹ day−¹). These are the first EPR estimations of P. sobrina and its previously known reproductive period is expanded. A Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to analyze EPR and species abundance of all calanoid copepods (40 spp.) collected throughout the time series in relation to temperature, salinity, mixed layer depth (MLD), dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentrations to identify the variables that best explained the copepod abundance variability.

Temperature, Chl-a, and salinity had the strongest effect on the biological variables, linked to seasonal and episodic upwelling-downwelling processes in the surveyed area. As a result of moderate upwelling events and seasonal variation of environmental conditions, it appears relatively few species are capable of maintaining continuous reproduction under the relatively higher temperatures and strong fluctuations of food availability that exist in this coastal habitat of the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

The response of the calanoid copepod community structure and diversity to the variability of the oceanographic conditions was analyzed from January 1996 to December 1998 in the central Mexican Pacific. Interannual variability in the water column was marked by the influence of the 1997-98 El Niño (EN). However, seasonal variability was principally linked to the periodicity of coastal upwelling processes. Two species, Subeucalanus subcrassus and Centro - pages furcatus, contributed 62% to the copepod abundance over the 3 yr period, with 16 species making up 95% of the copepod community. Most species were subtropical-tropical (88%), but equatorial (8%) and cosmopolitan (2%) species were also present. Up to 17 species were recorded in 50% or more of samples, of which 10 were coastal or neritic forms. The calanoid copepod community structure varied seasonally, with increased abundance and reduced species richness during upwelling conditions. During upwelling relaxation, the abundance declined but the species richness increased. Additional community variations were related to the EN event, when copepod abundances were significantly lower than during non-El Niño (NEN) periods (F = 20.387, p < 0.05), but seasonal changes were still detectable. There was no increase of species richness in the area related to the influence of EN. These data suggest that the response of this tropical neritic copepod community diverges from that of other zooplankters and that the community is more stable than expected, keeping a seasonal pattern even during the influence of a strong EN.

Estudios Ecológicos de Bahía Magdalena es un libro que surgió con la idea de sintetizar e integrar en un solo volumen, gran parte de los estudios sobre biología, ecología, oceanografía y ciencias sociales. La obra se compone de 20 capítulos, agrupados en cinco secciones con temas comunes: Oceanografía Física, Bentos, Plancton, Necton y aspectos Sociales e Históricos del complejo lagunar Bahía Magdalena-Almejas situado en la Costa sudoccidental de la península de Baja California. Los diferentes capítulos incluyen investigaciones originales y artículos de revisión del estado actual del conocimiento que se tiene sobre algún proceso o recurso natural, presentando nuevos enfoques y conceptos que pudieran definir futuras líneas de investigación, posibles áreas de protección y recomendaciones para el uso sustentable de los recursos naturales de uno de los ecosistemas lagunares de mayor biodiversidad y atractivo ecoturístico y pesquero, del litoral del Pacífico Mexicano.
