Ecometrica, together with partners in the UK, Mexico and Brazil, have collaborated on a UK Space Agency international partnership space programme (IPSP) project to advance EO applications in forests. A key objective was to improve EO derived information management for forest protection. Ecometrica’s cloud-based mapping platform was used to establish regional EO Labs within the partner organizations: ECOSUR (Mexico), INPE and FUNCATE (Brazil) and the University of Edinburgh (UK). The regional networks of EO Labs have provided a unified view of forestry-related data that is easy to access. In Mexico and Brazil the EO Labs enabled collaboration between research organisations and NGOs to develop applications for monitoring forest change in specified study areas and has enabled the compilation of previously unavailable regional EO and other spatial datasets into products that can be used by researchers, NGOs and state governments. Data on forest loss was linked to dynamic earth system models developed by the University of Edinburgh and INPE, utilising the EO Labs to provide an intuitive and powerful environment in which non-expert end-users can investigate the results from the huge datasets produced by multi-run model simulations. This paper demonstrates and discusses examples of mapping applications created on Ecometrica EO Labs by ECOSUR, INPE and the University of Edinburgh as part of this project, illustrating how cloud technology can enhance the field of forest protection.

El cambio climático es un problema con características únicas, ya que es de naturaleza global, sus impactos mayores serán en el largo plazo e involucra interacciones complejas entre procesos naturales (fenómenos ecológicos y climáticos) y procesos sociales, económicos y políticos a escala mundial. Dada la importancia del tema, el Instituto Nacional de Ecología, como parte de su misión de generar y difundir información científica y técnica sobre problemas ambientales prioritarios solicitó a un grupo de especialistas de diversas disciplinas que contribuyeran a este libro aportando y compartiendo sus conocimientos y experiencias sobre los aspectos científicos, sociales, económicos e institucionales del cambio climático.

Forestry has been proposed as a means to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions, by either reducing sources or enhancing sinks. This study assesses the potential of an incentive-based program to stimulate small farmers and communities to adopt biomass accumulating measures such as agroforestry or improved forest management. Current vegetation type, land use and stocks of carbon were assessed for an area of around 600 000 ha in southern Mexico, and the carbon (C) sequestration potential of a number of alternative techniques, based on farmers’ preferences, was estimated. Cost and benefit flows in US $ per Megagram (=106 g) of carbon (MgC) of each current and alternative system were developed. A model was designed to calculate the expected response to financial incentives of between US $0 and $40 per MgC sequestered. The most cost-effective method for sequestering carbon appears to be the improved management of natural forest on communal lands. We estimated that 38×106 MgC could be sequestered for under US $15 MgC−1, of which 32×106 MgC through forest management. The choice of a baseline rate of biomass loss under a ‘business-as-usual’ scenario remains a critical issue for estimates of the cost-effectiveness of carbon sequestration by forestry.
