Habitat fragmentation is a primary driver of wildlife loss, and establishment of biological corridors is a common strategy to mitigate this problem. A flagship example is the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor (MBC), which aims to connect protected forest areas between Mexico and Panama to allow dispersal and gene flow offorest organisms. Because forests across Central America have continued to degrade, the functioning of the MBC has been questioned, but reliable estimates of species occurrence were unavailable. Large mammals are suitable indicators of forest functioning, so we assessed their conservation status across the Isthmus of Panama, the narrowest section of the MBC. We used large-scale camera-trap surveys and hierarchical multispecies occupancy models in a Bayesian framework to estimate the occupancy of 9 medium to large mammals and developed an occupancy-weighted connectivity metric to evaluate species-specific functional connectivity. White-lippedpeccary (Tayassu pecari), jaguar (Panthera onca), giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), white-tailed deer(Odocoileus virginianus), and tapir (Tapirus bairdii) had low expected occupancy along the MBC in Panama. Puma (Puma concolor), red brocket deer (Mazama temama), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), and collared peccary (Pecari tajacu), which are more adaptable, had higher occupancy, even in areas with low forest cover near infrastructure. However, the majority of species were subject to > 1 gap that was larger than their known dispersal distances, suggesting poor connectivity along the MBC in Panama. Based on our results, forests in Darien, Donoso–Santa Fe, and La Amistad International Park are critical for survival of large terrestrial mammals in Panama and 2 areas need restoration.

La creación y mantenimiento de las áreas destinadas voluntariamente a la conservación (ADVC) es de gran relevancia para el futuro de la biodiversidad en México. Sin embargo, existen casos en los que este esquema de conservación se implementa desde una visión externa sin considerar la importancia de integrar la participación de los habitantes de dichas áreas. Este estudio se enfocó en caracterizar los procesos históricos y organizativos relacionados con la conservación voluntaria que se realiza en dos ejidos que presentan similitud de ecosistemas, ubicados en la Región Centro del estado de Guerrero. Para ello se identificaron elementos clave que permitieron fortalecer la organización comunitaria por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas, observación participante y talleres participativos. Además, se evaluó la presencia, abundancia y estado de conservación de los mamíferos silvestres medianos y grandes por medio de monitoreo con cámaras-trampa dentro de las áreas de conservación. Esta información se relacionó con algunas características de la organización comunitaria y la percepción de la conservación biológica por parte de los pobladores del área de estudio. Se registraron 18 especies de mamíferos silvestres con cámaras-trampa y tres con observación directa; cuatro especies se encuentran en peligro de extinción y dos en categoría de amenazadas para México. Se identificaron tres diferentes usos de los mamíferos: comestible, medicinal y cultural. La presencia de los elementos identificados en la organización comunitaria permite mejorar las posibilidades de éxito en los objetivos de la conservación biológica y mantener la integridad de las comunidades locales en la toma de decisiones y la construcción de su territorio.

Large mammalian herbivores are experiencing population reductions and range declines. However, we lack regional knowledge of population status for many herbivores, particularly in developing countries. Addressing this knowledge gap is key to implementing tailored conservation strategies forspecies whose population declines are highly variable across their range. White-lipped peccaries (Tayassupecari) are important ecosystem engineers in Neotropical forests and are highly sensitive to human disturbance. Despite maintaining a wide distributional range, white-lipped peccaries are experiencing substantial population declines in some portions of their range.We examined the regional distribution and population status of the species in Mesoamerica. We used a combination of techniques, including expert-based mapping and assessment of population status, and data-driven distribution modelling techniques to determine the status and range limits of white-lipped peccaries. Our analysis revealed declining and highly isolated populations of peccaries across Mesoamerica, with a range reduction of 87% from historic distribution and 63% from current IUCN range estimates for the region. White-lipped peccary distribution is affected by indices of human influence and forest cover, and more restricted than other sympatric large herbivores, with their largest populations confined to transboundary reserves. To conserve white-lipped peccaries in Mesoamerica, transboundary efforts will be needed that focus on both forest conservation and hunting management, increased cross-border coordination, and reconsideration of country and regional conservation priorities. Our methodology to detail regional white-lipped peccary status could be employed on other poorly-known large mammals.

The Cuatro Ciénegas Basin (CCB) in the state of Coahuila, Mexico, is a very diverse ecosystem with high endemism of flora and fauna. It is included in the Ramsar list of wetlands and considered as a priority area for conservation by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This site is located within the Chihuahuan Desert (CD) in an isolated area surrounded by the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra del Carmen. A previous study by Contreras-Balderas et al. (Southwest Nat 52:400–409, 2007) found 39 mammalian species occurring in the CCB Natural Protected Area, 30 of which are widespread. These authors concluded that there has been a long-term environmental stability in the area, based on archaeological records. In addition, the mammalian biota found is an admixture between the biotas from the Chihuahuan Biotic Province and the Tamaulipeca Province. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the biogeographic patterns of the mammals that occur in the CCB to determine whether this site was an important area of refuge during the Pleistocene’s climate pulses and to deepen our knowledge of the mammalian biota of the CCB. We obtained ecological niche models (ENMs) and projected them into past environmental conditions, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Last Interglacial (LIG), to determine whether this area could have constituted a refuge area for mammalian species. A review of the phylogeographic studies on these species to determine whether or not the CCB could have been a Pleistocene refuge for mammalian species was also conducted. Accordingly, we expect that species that found refuge in the CCB will show high genetic variation in this area, while species that were not present in the area during the Pleistocene will show lower levels of genetic variation.

According to our results, the CCB was an important area of refuge during Pleistocene climatic changes, specifically over the Sierra la Madera and Sierra San Marcos. Most mammalian species of the CCB are widespread. Results from past ENMs and phylogeographic analyses were consistent, except for five species of rodents, which did not conform to the expected patterns of genetic diversity and changes in their distribution. Most reviewed analyses failed to include an adequate sample size for Mexican populations. Therefore, conducting phylogeographic studies of these mammals in the CD is fundamental for understanding the dynamics that determined its biodiversity.

This book brings a unique perspective to animal movement studies because all cases came from tropical environments where the great diversity, either biological and structurally (trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes), presents the animal with several options to fulfill its live requirements. These conditions have forced the evolution of unique movement patterns and ecological strategies. Movement is an essential process in the life of all organisms. Animals move because they are hungry, thirsty, to avoid being eaten, or because they want to find mates. Understanding the causes and consequences of animal movement is not an easy task for behavioural ecologists. Many animals are shy, move in secretive ways and are very sensible to human presence, therefore, studying the movements of mammals in tropical environments present logistical and methodological challenges that have recently started to be solved by ecologist around the world. In this book we are compiling a set of extraordinary cases where researchers have used some of the modern technology and the strongest methodological approaches to understand movement patterns in wild tropical mammals. We hope this book will inspire and encourage young researchers to investigate wild mammal´s movements in some of the amazing tropical environments of the world.

This book compiles a remarkable array of studies dealing with Neotropical mammal movement patterns and therefore presents a unique opportunity to analyze the state of the art of movement ecology of some of the rarest and secretive species that are top predators, important prey to those predators, and/or critical to maintaining the ecosystem services of the forest ecosystems they inhabit. In this last chapter, we attempt to summarize lessons learned from all chapters and advance the field with respect to our understanding of the causes and consequences of animal movements in tropical forests.
