Applicability of biodiversity databases to regional conservation planning in the tropics: a case study evaluation of the effect of environmental bias on the performance of predictive models of species richness

The biodiversity data typically available for fitting distributional models in the tropics come from museum and scientific collections which are often incomplete and prone to sampling and environmental biases. Nevertheless, most studies undertaken in tropical regions assume that collection data offers a satisfactory environmental coverage without any quantitative assessment. In this study, we investigate the effects of differences in environmental bias and coverage provided by distributional data when aggregated into different grid cell sizes, on the performance of species richness-environment models and predictions. We use an extensive data compilation, including national and regional collections, on the distribution of amphibians, reptiles and fishes in the hydrologic region of the Usumacinta River as a case study. General additive models and environmental variables are used to construct predictive models at 40, 20, 10 and 5 km grid resolutions, based on well-sampled cells. The best multivariate models included nonparametric interaction terms for the effects of precipitation and temperature and suggested an altitudinal shift in the relative importance of energy and water in determining the distribution of species richness.

For fishes, geomorphology accounted for fine scale variation in species richness along the hydrologic network, indicated by peaks in species diversity at the junction of the major rivers where major accumulation of water and sediments occurs. For all taxonomic groups, we found that sampling biases deviated most from the mean bias at the extremes of gradients accounting for important environmental factors. The pattern of environmental bias changed with grid size, with the form and amount of change being casespecific. Biases affected distribution predictions when compared with unbiased datasets. Moreover, not all models resulted best at coarser resolution as it is commonly assumed. Our results demonstrate that bias in the available data must be evaluated before mapping biodiversity distributions, irrespective of the choice of scale.

Se utilizó un enfoque de métodos mixtos para determinar los movimientos estacionales y regionales del macabí (A. vulpes) en la Bahía de Corozal-Chetumal (CB) y la Costa del Caribe (CC). Se utilizaron entrevistas, cuestionarios, talleres, observación participante y notas de campo para recopilar el conocimiento local sobre tiempo y dirección del movimiento en relación a la estacionalidad, hábitat, alimentación y reproducción. Tambien se utilizaron experimentos de marcado-recaptura para: a) determinar la frecuencia de tallas, abundancia y distancias de migración; b) modelar movimiento y abundancia en asociación a variables bióticas y abióticas; c) modelar movimiento y supervivencia con modelos multi-estado en el programa MARK. Se encontraron tallas significativamente mayores en CC (35 + 4.9 cm) que en CB (media = 28.6 + 4.1 cm), debido a una posible mayor densidad y diversidad de presas en los fondos de pastos marinos de CC. Los movimientos a lo largo de la costa fueron: 1) locales de corta distancia, norte-sur y sur-norte, en ámbitos hogareños (distancias > 3.5 km), asociados con la alimentación y en secas y lluvias (febrero a octubre) durante altas temperaturas, y 2) migraciones de larga distancia (> 10 km) ida y vuela de este-oeste y oeste-este, entre CB y dos sitios de agregación de pre-desove (APD) en el norte de Belice y durante los nortes (noviembre a enero) cuando las temperaturas fueron más bajas. El movimiento resultó en: a) mayor abundancia de tallas pequeñas (<22 cm) en CB durante secas y lluvias y una mayor abundancia de tallas grandes (> 22 cm) en CC durante nortes, y b) menor sobrevivencia en CB que en CC durante nortes debido a la migración. El macabí como una especie sombrilla tiene implicaciones y se recomienda que Belice y México desarrollen una estrategia binacional de conservación y manejo de los hábitats de forrajeo y APD para mantener poblaciones saludables.

Bonefish (Albula vulpes) are an important resource for catch-and-release fishing in the Caribbean Sea. Understanding movements within and between the Caribbean Coast (CC) and Chetumal-Corozal Bay (CB) in Mexico and Belize is crucial for identifying and protecting home ranges, migration routes, pre-spawning and spawning sites. We used a mixed-methods approach to document dynamics of bonefish movement. We collected fishers’ local knowledge (LK) using qualitative methods including workshops, key informant interviews, participant observation and field notes about bonefish seasonal movements. We then used mark-recapture (8816 tagged, 569 recaptured) method to understand bonefish movements by size, location and season. Bonefish were significantly larger in CC than in CB. We documented several seasonal movement patterns. A southward movement within CB during the rainy season was likely driven by salinity changes. This was followed by an eastward long-distance migration during the norths or cold front season between the bay and the Caribbean Sea, likely for spawning, as we document likely spawning readiness, pre-spawning behavior and synchronized to the fore-reef at one of two pre-spawning aggregation sites in a World Heritage Site in the CC of Belize during November and December of 2018. There was then a northward movement during the dry season as a journey back to home ranges. The information presented herein can inform resource management and protected areas planning towards a bi-national conservation and management of bonefish and its habitats.

Bonefish (Albula vulpes) is a socioeconomically important species that supports a data-poor recreational fishery in developing countries. Understanding how environmental variables influence its abundance and movement is important for better decision-making.This study used mark-recapture to examine the association between abiotic (temperature, salinity, wind speed, tides moon phase, and sediment coarseness) and biotic (presence of predators and bottom vegetation) variables with bonefish movement and abundance in Corozal-Chetumal bay and the adjacent Caribbean coast of southern Mexico and northern Belize. We used seinesto capture bonefish, marked 9657 using dart tags and recaptured 595 fish (6.2% recapture rate) during 16 sample periods between January 2016 and February 2018. Marked bonefish size ranged 19.5–56.4 cm and recaptured 23.9–49.4 cm. Total abundance for each seine sample and distance between mark and recapture locations were used in two separate multiple stepwise regression analyses. Movement was negatively associated with temperature and predator presence, while sediment coarseness and moon phase were positively associated. Temperature increases were associated withshort-distance movements. Temperature decreases and high-illumination lunar phases were associated with longer-distance movement and likely related to spawning migrations. Presence of predators, like barracuda, was associated with low bonefish abundances and was likely an adaptive response to form multiple schools of low density by bonefish to avoid predation. These spatiotemporal movement and abundance patterns are recommended to be taken into account in fisheries and protected areas management and to inform the decision-making process in urban and tourism development in coastal habitats.

Parasitic nematodes in Snappers (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) from the Southern Gulf of Mexico and Mexican Caribbean

Snappers from the southern Gulf of Mexico (SGM) and Mexican Caribbean (CAR) were examined for parasitic nematodes to determine their richness, composition, and infection parameters (prevalence and mean intensity). From February 2016 to March 2018, 431 individuals of 8 snapper species were collected in 6 localities. In all, these fishes were parasitized by 2,275 individual nematodes belonging to 13 taxa: Terranova sp. was found in 7 of 8 host species and showed the highest prevalence (23%), while the rest had lower values (<10%). Lutjanus griseus (Linnaeus) harbored the highest species richness (10 species), followed by Lutjanus apodus (Walbaum) (8 species). Most localities were similar in terms of species richness but differed in the specific composition. Eight nematode taxa represent new host records for the family Lutjanidae (Gill), thus increasing to 22 the nematode taxa in the SGM and CAR. There is a potential risk to public health due to the presence of nematodes with zoonotic potential (as Anisakis sp.) and the habit in the region of eating raw fish (cebiche).

Marine protected areas (MPAs) conserve diversity and abundance of fish communities. According to the biotic resistance hypothesis, communities with higher diversity and abundance should resist invasions better. To test this idea, the presence of lionfish in two Caribbean MPAs was studied: Parque Nacional Guanahacabibes (PNG) in Cuba and Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Xcalak (PNAX) in Mexico. Selection of these MPAs was based on both their different levels of success with enforcement and different abundances of native fish, with a more abundant native fish fauna at PNG. Underwater visual censuses were used to evaluate both the native fish structure and composition and at the same time distribution and abundance of lionfish. The abundance of potential predators on lionfish was also measured to determine possible effects of lionfish on both the abundance and the size of its prey and competitors. Lionfish showed higher abundance and larger size in PNG compared to PNAX, even though its probable competitors and predators were also more abundant and larger in PNG. Prey abundance and size decreased after the invasion. No correlation was detected between potential predators and lionfish, which might indicate natural predation is not substantial. In PNAX, lower abundance of prey, potential competitors and predators can also be attributed to historical overfishing, but this did not provide an advantage to lionfish. Lionfish were less abundant and reached smaller sizes in PNAX compared to PNG. This work confirms the effectiveness of lionfish culling at PNAX, but does not support the biotic resistence hypothesis that native fish might have controlled this invasive species.

El proyecto estudió los movimientos de peces entre el mar Caribe (áreas protegidas de Xcalak, México y Bacalar Chico, Belice) y la bahía de Chetumal/Corozal, también un área protegida (Santuario del Manatí), por marcado-recaptura, isótopos estables y parasitología, con énfasis en el macabí (Albula vulpes), un recurso valioso y vulnerable, así como en la palometa (Trachinotus falcatus), pargos (Lutjanus griseus, L. apodus), barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), pez aguja (Strongylura notata), y otros. Se buscó no sólo una descripción de las migraciones estacionales, sino también cambios entre la situación actual y la de hace una década y media, para la cual se comparó con datos propios previos, tanto en el arrecife de Xcalak como en la bahía de Chetumal, con el fin de estimar los posibles efectos de la apertura de una comunicación directa con el mar a través del canal de Zaragoza. Al cabo de tres años de trabajo y unos 100 días efectivos en el campo, se marcaron cerca de 9000 ejemplares de macabí y palometa y se recuperaron casi 600 marcas, además de analizar isotópicamente más de 100 muestras de tejido. También se realizaron talleres con pescadores en ambos países, tanto para aprender de su conocimiento tradicional, como para colaborar en la recuperación de marcas y compartir los avances. Por último, se examinó también la aproximación de especies exóticas invasoras a la bahía, tanto desde el mar (pez león, Pterois volitans) como desde el río Hondo (pez diablo, Pterygoplichthys pardalis). Los resultados del proyecto, que siguen analizándose, confirman el grado de dependencia mutua de ambos ecosistemas, bahía y mar adyacente, a través de los movimientos de los peces, y se detallan en tesis, artículos y ponencias sobre macabí, barracuda, pargos, pez aguja, pez león, pez diablo, y los cambios de la ictiofauna en general desde 1995 a la fecha.

Se presenta una lista sistemática de los peces registrados en los sistemas estuarino lagunares Mar Muerto, La Joya-Buenavista y Los Patos-Solo Dios, en el noreste del golfo de Tehuantepec, México. Las muestras se obtuvieron en 34 estaciones utilizando varias artes de pesca, entre abril 2007 y mayo 2016. La lista incluye 2 clases, 19 órdenes, 52 familias, 87 géneros y 120 especies. Las familias mejor representadas son Carangidae (9 especies), Gerreidae (7) y Engraulidae (6). El sistema Mar Muerto tuvo 89 especies, seguido de La Joya-Buenavista con 76. En el sistema Los Patos-Solo Dios únicamente se registraron 41 especies, debido quizá a una baja influencia marina. Según la afinidad ecogeográfica, 43% del total fueron especies marinas estenohalinas, 42% marinas eurihalinas, 11% dulceacuícolas y 5% residentes estuarinas. La ictiofauna mostró una alta afinidad a la provincia Panámica (80.7%), seguida por las provincias Mexicana (79.8%) y Cortés (73.1%). Nueve especies (8 nativas y 1 exótica) se adicionan a la ictiofauna continental conocida de Chiapas.

A checklist of fishes recorded from Mar Muerto, La Joya-Buenavista, and Los Patos-Solo Dios lagoon-estuarine systems, northeastern Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico is presented. Fish samples were collected through 34 stations using several kinds of fishing gear, between April 2007 and May 2016. The checklist includes 2 classes, 19 orders, 52 families, 87 genera, and 120 species. The best-represented families are Carangidae (9 species), Gerreidae (7), and Engraulidae (6). The Mar Muerto system had 89 species, followed by La Joya-Buenavista with 76; in Los Patos-Solo Dios, only 41 species were recorded, perhaps due to a lower marine influence. Based on their ecological affinities, 43% of the fishes belong to marine stenohaline component, 42% to the marine euryhaline component, 11% are of freshwater derivation, and 5% are estuarine residents. The ichthyofauna showed high affinities to the Panamic province (80.7%) followed by Mexican (79.8%) and Cortés (73.1%) provinces. Nine species (8 native and 1 exotic) are added to the known continental fish fauna of the state of Chiapas.
