The effect of three strains of the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and two strains of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin upon the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), was studied in three coffee farms at different altitudes (450Ð1,100 m above sea level) in Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico. The maximum average percentage mycosis varied according to altitude. At 450 m asl (El Rincon) mycosis was 14.3% for B. bassiana and 6.3% for M. anisopliae; at 880 m asl (Santa Anita) mycosis was 40.6% for B. bassiana and 12.6% for M. anisopliae, and at 1,100masl (Alpujarras) 33.9% for B. bassiana and 22. l% for M. anisopliae. The effect of fungal mycosis through time was not signiÞcant (P< 0.01) in any of the farms, but there was a signiÞcant difference between the strains of the fungus (P< 0.01); the best strains being Bb25 and Ma4 at the lower altitude, Bb26 and Ma4 for the middle altitude and Bb26 and Ma4 at the higher altitude. Environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity and rain were not correlated with the percentage mycosis caused by B. bassiana and M. anisopliae. However, in the case of B. bassiana there was a signiÞcant, positive correlation (P< 0.01) between the infestation levels of the pest and the mycosis response of the entomopathogen.

Laboratory bioassays, at 25 ± 2°C, 80 ± 5% HR and 12:12 h L:D, were conducted to evaluate several strains of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae on “white grub complex”. All strains were pathogenic to Phyllophaga spp. larvae (L3) causing mortality from 28.3 to 61.6% by B. bassiana and from 21.6 to 90% by M. anisopliae. The strains that caused higher mortality were Bb26 (61.6%) of B. bassiana, and MaN7 (90%) of M. anisopliae. Lethal time (LT50) was 4.9 days (FL95 = 3.6 to 7.1) for Bb26 and 6.1 days (Fiducial Limits FL95 = 4.6 to 7.7) for MaN7. Lethal concentration (LC50) was 1.29 x 10^ con/g with MaN7 strain and 1.15 x 1 0^ con/g with the Bb26 strain, respectively. The application of B. bassiana did not reduce the damage done by larvae in terms of plant biomass production (total plant weight and stem weight) compared with the controls. However, the application of M. anisopliae had a negative effect on these two variables (reduction of plant biomass) with respect to the values found in the controls.

The entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin and Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and the bethylid parasitoid Prorops nasuta Waterston are natural enemies of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), and are considered valuable biocontrol agents in the coffee-growing regions of Central and South America. Laboratory evaluations were made on the impact of three isolates of each fungus on adult P. nasuta. These isolates were selected because of their high virulence toward H. hampei in previous studies. B. bassiana isolate Bb25 and M. anisopliae isolate Ma4 caused the lowest infection levels in P. nasuta with LC50 values of 8.31 3 106 and 4.08 3 106 spores per milliliter, respectively, by direct inoculation. Spore suspensions of each of these isolates were applied to coffee berry borer infested coffee berries. P. nasuta adult females were allowed to search and parasitize hosts within the treated berries. Despite the high virulence of these fungi to P. nasuta, neither pathogen signiÞcantly affected the predatory or parasitic capacity of P. nasuta, indicating that these isolates may be compatible with the action of the parasitoid under Þeld conditions provided that pathogen applications and parasitoid liberations are timed not to coincide.

The entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana is considered to be one of the few natural enemies available for use against the coffee berry borer. In an attempt to enhance the efficacy of this pathogen, a range of concentrations of 22 substances was tested in simple laboratory tests using natural sunlight or a UV light source. Unprotected B. bassiana spores were almost completely inactivated by exposure to 60 min of direct sunlight or 20 s of UV light of 302 nm wavelength. Seven of the 22 substances tested showed little or no photoprotective properties and eight of the substances appeared directly detrimental to spore germination. Of the remainder, sucrose, yeast, yeast extract, uric acid, casein, and molasses had limited photoprotective properties. The most effective substances tested were egg albumen and skimmed milk powder which could extend the persistence of B. bassiana spores by a factor of almost three. A mixture of 3% (w/v) albumen and 4% (w/v) milk powder gave the highest degree of spore protection per unit cost. Young coffee plants sprayed with this mixture did not suffer any significant phytotoxic effects. A field trial, involving two applications of spores with or without the milk and albumen mixture, failed to show that improved spore persistence resulted in increased coffee berry borer control. Very lowlevels of pest infestation observed in field plots together with unusual, unfavourable weather conditions may have accounted for this unexpected result.
