A new species of Dentiphilometra (Nematoda: philometridae) from the musculature of the gray snapper Lutjanus griseus (Osteichthyes) off the caribbean coast of Mexico

A new nematode, Dentiphilometra lutjani n. sp. (Philometridae), is described from gravid females (the male is unknown) collected from the body musculature of the marine perciform fish gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus (Lutjanidae), from the Bay of Chetumal and southern coast of Quintana Roo, off the Caribbean coast of Mexico. The new species differs from the only other congener, Dentiphilometra monopteri, from the swamp eel Monopterus albus in China, mainly in the body length of gravid female (15.40–53.21 mm), the shape of the posterior body end (not markedly narrowed, with low caudal projections), the esophageal gland (maximum width near its posterior end), and the length (344–483 m) of larvae from the uterus; both species also differ in their host types (marine perciform fish vs. freshwater swamp eel) and geographical distribution (Mexico vs. China).

A new nematode species, Spirophilometra pacifica sp. n. (Philometridae), is described from gravid female specimens collected from the mouth cavity (the upper palate) of the fish (yellow snook) Centropomus robalito (Centropomidae, Perciformes) from the Chantuto-Panzacola system, Chiapas, in the Pacific coast of Mexico. Its morphology is very similar to that of the species originally described as Philometra centropomi Caballero, 1974, but the gravid females of S. pacifica are about three times longer (body length 11.63-18.17 mm); host species and the geographical distribution of both these forms also differ. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of S. pacifica, used for the first time for a Spirophilometra species, confirmed the presence of numerous minute cuticular spines on the body surface, 14 cephalic papillae arranged in two circlets, and two small lateral papilla-like caudal projections. It is evident that some features of P. centropomi were incorrectly described (its types are not available) and this species is now transferred to Spirophilometra as S. centropomi (Caballero, 1974) comb. n.

Scanning electron microscopy of the cystidicolid nematode Ascarophis mexicana Moravec, Salgado-Maldonado et Vivas-Rodríguez, 1995 enabled the first detailed study of its cephalic structure. In contrast to most Ascarophis species, its pseudolabia are highly reduced and sublabia are unlobed and weakly developed. Similascarophis is considered a synonym of Ascarophis, to which two its species are transferred as A. maulensis (Muñoz, González et George-Nascimento, 2004) comb. n. and A. chilensis (Muñoz, González et George-Nascimento, 2004) comb. n.

Two new nematode species, orientatractis campechensis n. sp. and orientatractis chiapasensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Atractidae) from cichlid fishes in southern Mexico and Nicaragua

Two new nematode species, Orientatractis campechensis n. sp. and Orientatractis chiapasensis n. sp. (Atractidae, Cosmocercoidea), are described from the intestine of cichlid fishes collected in localities of southeastern Mexico and Nicaragua. The se atractid nematodes are characterized by the presence of a cephalic end armed with 4 marked, Y-shaped, well-sclerotized pieces, consisting of 2 "horns" extending outward and downward and immediately below a single-homed structure. Both new species differ from the other 2 species of Orientatractis (Orientatractis leiperi and Orientatractis levanhoai) mainly in the body measurements, presence of a vulvar appendix, lengths of spicules and of the gubernaculum, distribution of caudal papillae, and the number of anterior sclerotized structures. Morphological and biometrical variations were evident among specimens from different hosts and localities, with the larger organisms being collected from Vieja bifasciata and Cichlasoma pearsei. Orientatractis campechensis and 0. chiapasensis represent the first 2 species of this genus parasitizing freshwater fishes; the other species have been found in amphibians and reptiles.

Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) chetumalensis n. sp. is described from the stomach and intestine of the Mayan sea catfish Ariopsis assimilis (Gunther, 1864), from the Bay of Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is characterized by bifurcate deirids; males have 3 pairs of preanal papillae, 6 pairs of postanal papillae, 2 pairs of transverse elongate adanal papillae surrounding the cloacal aperture, wide caudal alae, spicules of unequal length, and a gubernaculum, and females have a rounded tail bearing a digit-like process terminating in 2 spines. This is the seventh Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) species reported from fishes in Mexico and the first one recorded in sea catfishes of the Ariidae.

This paper comprises a systematic survey of larval nematodes collected from fishes from cenotes (= sinkholes) of the Peninsula of Yucatan, southern Mexico, in 1993-1994. Larvae of the following nine species were recorded: Physocephalus sexalatus, Acuariidae gen. sp., Spiroxys sp., Falcaustra sp., Hysterothylacium cenotae, Contracaecum sp. Type 1, Contracaecum sp. Type 2, Goezia sp., and Eustrongylides sp. Larvae of P. sexalatus are recorded from fishes (Rhamdia guatemalensis) for the first time. The larvae are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Adults of these larvae are parasitic in piscivorous fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals (definitive hosts). Fishes harbouring the larvae of these parasites serve as paratenic hosts, being mostly an important source of infection for the definitive hosts.
